Men warned of greater cancer risk
unhealthy_men.jpgOn 15 June, BBC published an article warning men of a greater cancer risk. A recently released study has found that men are 60% more likely to develop cancer and 70% more likely to die from it; among cancers that affect both sexes.  These results surprised scientists and they said there is no known biological reason for this; their only assumption is that these it may be because women take better care of themselves.

US Congress backs tobacco clampdown
The US House of Representatives has backed a bill introducing tough new curbs on the tobacco industry. The House passed the bill by 307-97, a day after it was overwhelmingly approved by the Senate. It now goes to President Obama to be signed into law. The bill gives the US Food and Drug Administration strong powers to regulate the content and marketing of tobacco products.

ASCO promotes personalizing cancer care

Oncologists and delegates from around the world gathered to review the latest scientific data, recognize the achievements of colleagues in the field, and celebrate the profession of oncology. The theme of the meeting emphasised “Personalizing Cancer Care.”

Leading NGOs call for international action to combat epidemic of NCDs
uicc_idf_whf_small.jpg20 May, Geneva- In conjunction with the 62nd session of the World Health Assembly, which opened on Monday 18 May, UICC, International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and World Heart Federation (WHF) hosted a joint event on yesterday on the growing epidemic of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in low- and middle-income countries. Opening the event was IDF President Martin Silink, who was followed by Ms. Bola Ojo, Executive Director of the World Heart Federation Africa Network, and Professor David Hill, President of UICC, who both gave brief key speeches about the growing epidemic of NCD like cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes.
