Singapore Capacity-Building Workshop underway |

The UICC
Capacity Building Workshop is currently underway in Singapore. Over thirty
participants from fifteen countries around the world are taking part in this
two-day workshop that will provide training and technical support in order to
assist them in using research to guide the development and evaluation of cancer
prevention programmes. Lectures, along with facilitated small-group exercises
and one-on-one discussion opportunities, are underway from 2 - 4 November.

Study Dispels HPV Vaccination Fears |
|
A new survey is dispelling many fears associated with the
cervical cancer vaccination program in the United Kingdom. Around 2,800 women
in the United Kingdom are diagnosed with cervical cancer and over 1,000 die
from the disease annually. The HPV vaccine is a key component to reducing the
risk of cervical cancer, but many parents feared girls vaccinated would ignore
the risks associated with sexual activity.

Strong Support for the World Cancer Declaration in China |
|
Support for the World Cancer Declaration has reached
another important milestone as Dr. Chen Zhu, Minister of Health in China,
officially signed the World Cancer Declaration. Dr. Chen signed the Declaration in a
recent meeting between UICC Board
President, David Hill, and the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association, a UICC member organization.

Fitness Centres Severely Lack Healthy Food Options |
|
In a recent study of 35 leisure centres in the United
Kingdom, the British Heart Foundation discovered a shocking amount of unhealthy
snacks and foods being offered. Despite a ban on junk food from schools and
children’s TV programmes, there is an overwhelming availability of unhealthy
options where children exercise and play. The Food Commission’s survey included
leisure facilities, bowling alleys, ice skating rinks and park cafes.

Fourth My Child Matters call for projects - now open! |
The International Union Against Cancer (UICC) and sanofi-aventis are launching a fourth call for projects under the My Child Matters international programme which aims to fight childhood cancer in low- and- middle-income countries. Since 2005, My Child Matters has so far supported 33 projects in 21 countries across the world, and is now being extended to include projects from Cameroon, Ecuador, Mozambique, Panama and Thailand. Applications close 13 November 2009.
