The International Union Against Cancer (UICC) is the leading international non-governmental organization dedicated exclusively to the global control of cancer.

Vision

A dynamic global community of connected cancer control organizations, professionals and volunteers working together to eliminate cancer as a major life-threatening disease for future generations [1]

Mission

To connect, mobilize and support cancer organizations and individuals with knowledge and skills to be effective

Guiding principles

  1. support positions and activities based on scientific evidence and argument
  2. speak and act independently of commercial or political interests (and be seen to do so)
  3. engage in activities with broad international relevance and impact while encouraging adaptation by members to fit local resources and needs
  4. build partnerships to leverage skills and resources
  5. embrace opportunities to redress international disadvantages and inequities

Strategic objectives

  1. build and maintain a strong membership base
  2. develop, maintain and continuously improve knowledge transfer platforms for communication, connection, and mutual support
  3. establish/enhance the authority of UICC through key knowledge transfer "flagship" activities
  4. build international capacity for cancer control, by promoting collaboration and partnerships across sectors and geographical divides
  5. use the collective voice of UICC to advocate globally for cancer control as a public health priority and for achieving the achievable
  6. provide resources and "umbrella" support for coordinated activities that complement activities of member organizations for the populations they serve
  7. build and maintain competent, adaptable, and effective UICC secretariat

Notes

[1] Cancer control planning is defined as an endeavour on a national basis to analyse the cancer situation, to assess existing resources, to set short and medium term action priorities and deadlines. It needs to cover the whole cancer continuum from basic and applied research to prevention, treatment and palliative care.
